Day 8 in Africa: A few of my favorite things...

1. Fig Jam. Words would completely desecrate the sacred, salivatory, sweetness and goodness of this incredible stuff. When paired with fresh butter and bread it sends you completely a la lune!

2. Incense from the Becker's home and from the Sandaga market.

3. Waking up to call to prayer.

4. Mangos from Mali. I'm pretty sure I never truly had a mango before Africa-- positively mind blowing.

5. Chacos.

6. Beautiful senegalese babies. I want one so badly!

7. Taxis held together by two pieces of scotch tape.

8. Aminata: The Grace Kelly of Senegal--
elegant, refined, and all-around incredible taste.

9. Singing old showtunes with Dr. Johnson as we prepare supper.

10. The beautiful smiles, kind acts, and expressions of gratitude from people who have so little.

  1. Dearest Kelly Madsen!!! I was so glad when your mom emailed me the link to your blog! I miss you so much! I was so glad to see you have this amazing opportunity, and I can't wait to read more of your adventures in Africa!

I was actually thinking about you last week because my sister-in-law gave me the movie "How to Steal a Million" as a graduation gift, and I never would have fallen in love with that movie if it weren't for you!

We'll have to try to get together when you get home, okay? I love you, more than you know! Thanks for being such an amazing example to me and Darwin. Even though we never see your family any more, we admire you guys and look up to you so much! Take care, Kel!

  2. Wow, you're getting some fantastic photos. I love the expression on her face. She looks so beatific, like a virgin Mary or something. Her baby, on the other hand, looks a little unsure about whether the bum carrier is such a good idea.

  3. HaHaHaHaHa! Jed, you are hilarious! Your comment provoked this thought--maybe Jesus was carried in a bum carrier and although the virgin Mary was walking around looking so beatific maybe the thought was crossing HIS mind that this coming down to save mankind was not such a good idea! A little sacrilegious,I know, but I am sure that Jesus had a good sense of humor. One would have to after being carried in a bum carrier.

  4. 3. Cool 4. You should try Asian ones :) 6. A white woman tried that with some Haitian ones and it didn't end up so well. 7. Have they not upgraded to Duct Tape yet?

  5. I miss the call to prayer SO much, though I'm sure the experience is different there than in Jerusalem. Eat it up for me!
